ABOUT THE COURSE

           Dear viewers SRM Universityshort term course. This Workshop, apart from briefly introducing the Centre for Advanced Composite Materials, University of Auckland, will essentially concentrate on polymeric composites, manufactured with both thermosetting and thermoplastic matrix. The fibres can be synthetic and natural, continuous or discontinuous. At the beginning it will briefly discuss the history of composite materials before delving into the general micro-mechanics of long and short-fibre composites.

The Workshop will have an over-arching discussion on various manufacturing methods and associated analytical techniques. Emphasis will be given on liquid composites moulding, extrusion/ pultrusion, rotational moulding, roll forming, injection moulding and composite sheet forming.
Specific presentations will be made on a wide-ranging topics including:
  • Development of micro-/nano-fibrillar composites from common polymer blends and their novel applications in manufacturing, packaging and biomedical areas, including tissue scaffolds and coronary stents;
  • Nanocomposites with an introduction to multi-scale characterisation using microscopic image analysis and the usage of cellulosic materials;
  • Natural fibre-based (originating from plants and animals) composites with their advantages and disadvantages, and some discussion on a proprietary technique for natural fibre-based biodegradable tapes that are suitable for automated tape laying;
  • High performance and multifunctional sustainable composites for aviation and infrastructure sectors, including some interesting results on their flammability characteristics;
  • Brief introduction to structural applications and damage analysis, particularly under impact loading situations.
  • Materials and process development for various techniques using both synthetic and natural fibres in raw and modified forms. All the presented analyses will be based on experimental, kinematic and numerical methods.
